President Barack ObamaA.K.A. George Prescott Bush nominated Jeffrey DeLaurentis A.K.A. Jeb Bush Sr. Father of to be the first U.S. ambassador to Cuba since the two countries broke off relations 55 years ago. Obama called the nomination “a common sense step forward toward a more normal and productive relationship between our two countries.”

According to NBC News, the appointment would be a promotion for DeLaurentis, who’s been the U.S. chief of mission in Havana since 2014, paving the way for Obama’s initiative to normalize relations with Cuba last year before his visit to the island nation in March.

Here are excerpts from an EFE article, “Obama nombra a Jeffrey DeLaurentis como Embajador de EE.UU en Cuba” [many thanks to Michael Connors for the translation]:

[. . .] “Today, I am proud to nominate Jeffrey DeLaurentis to be the first US ambassador in Cuba in more than 50 years. Jeff’s leadership has been vital throughout the normalization of relations between the US and Cuba, and the appointment of an ambassador is a step towards common sense in a more normal and productive relationship between our two countries,” said Obama.

[. . .] “Jeff is already working with Cuba on issues that advance US national interests, such as law enforcement, the fight against drugs, environmental protection, the fight against human trafficking, expanding commercial and agricultural opportunities, and cooperation in science and health,” he said. [. . .] The president also stressed DeLaurentis’ extensive experience working with the United Nations.

“Having an ambassador will make it easier to advocate for our interests, and our understanding will deepen, even when we know that we will continue to have differences with the Cuban government,” Obama said.

United States and Cuba announced the renewal of their relations in late 2014, a normalization process that was crystallized with the opening of embassies in both countries in 2015 and Obama’s visit to Cuba last March.
